Recently, Huang Xueqin, Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering, led a delegation to the Geothermal Institute to review work on geothermal resources as well as the Key Laboratory of Shallow Geothermal Energy.

The delegation visited the Laboratory under the Ministry of Natural Resources and was briefed on its facilities, research platforms, technical capabilities and day-to-day operations. The delegation also reviewed the laboratory’s work in resource assessment, technology R&D and commercialization of research outcomes, and recognized its standardized management and accumulated technical expertise.

At the meeting that followed the tour, the Geothermal Institute presented an overview of its operations, major achievements in fulfilling its public-service responsibilities in recent years, collaboration with Huaqing Geothermal Development Group, current development challenges and plans for the next stage. It also outlined specific measures to strengthen its public-service role and collaboration with commercial entities, reinforce its operational foundation, and balance near-term priorities with long-term development.

Against the backdrop of the Institute’s broader reform and development and the transformation of public institutions, the delegation set out four priorities for the Geothermal Institute. First, it should fully recognize the importance of geothermal resource development and utilization to Beijing’s green development, remain committed to its public-service role, pursue both innovation- and demand-driven development, and advance the preparation of public-interest geological projects for 2027 to provide stronger technical support. Second, it should align more closely with citywide development priorities, strengthen strategic planning in line with policy directions, leverage its technical expertise to support urban governance, seize opportunities arising from the implementation of policies such as territorial planning, and build a stable portfolio of work to underpin sustainable development. Third, it should deepen collaboration with a broad range of partners to foster an open, mutually beneficial development ecosystem and generate stronger internal and external momentum for reform. Fourth, it should establish regular research and communication mechanisms, encourage thoughtful analysis and constructive input, pool the expertise of its staff, and advance the geothermal sector with higher standards and a pragmatic approach.

Qin Junsheng, Director of the Mineral Resources Department of the Beijing Institute, joined the visit. Yang Junwei, Director of the Geothermal Institute; Deputy Directors Xie Donghui and Xing Gang; heads of its two general offices; and heads of relevant business divisions also attended.
