On July 31, Yan Xincheng, Party Secretary of the Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering, and Liu Shaomin, Deputy Party Secretary and President of the Institute, led a delegation to the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring for discussions on the development and application of a geological safety foundation model. Chu Hongbin, Party Secretary and President of the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring; Zhang Mingzhi, Vice President of the Institute; and Li Fangzhen, Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering, participated in the discussion.
Chu Hongbin welcomed the delegation. He noted that the application of “AI + geology” is still at an early stage, with considerable room for technological advancement and broad prospects for future use. He called on the two institutes to build on the practical needs of geological disaster prevention and control in Beijing, further strengthen central–local collaboration, and deepen cooperation in joint technological R&D, talent exchanges and collaborative research projects. Regular communication and coordination should also be promoted across different fields and at different levels to create stronger synergies.
Yan Xincheng expressed appreciation for the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring’s longstanding support for geological work in Beijing. He said that integrating big data and artificial intelligence into the citywide decision-making and command system for geological disaster prevention and response would have significant practical value in making disaster prevention and mitigation more science-based. Going forward, the two institutes should broaden the scope of cooperation and establish a long-term central–local coordination mechanism. Yan also said that the geological safety model should promote end-to-end applications covering precise disaster identification, emergency response to imminent hazards, with refined early-warning analysis, and standardized preparation of technical products and deliverables. He also called for a talent exchange and training system combining short- and long-term programs, with regular professional study, technical placements and joint practical training to jointly cultivate a highly skilled geological science and technology workforce.
Liu Shaomin stressed that cooperation should remain problem-oriented and closely aligned with real-world management needs. Greater research efforts should focus on difficult issues such as accurate short-term and imminent disaster warnings and rapid post-disaster hazard identification, so as to reduce the traditional overreliance on manual work in disaster prevention. He also called for concrete implementation of the central–local coordination mechanism and full integration of the two sides’ technological, data and platform resources to improve the overall quality and efficiency of geological disaster prevention and control during the flood season.
At the meeting, the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring gave a detailed briefing on the latest progress in developing the geological safety foundation model and an AI agent for intelligent geological disaster identification. The Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering introduced Beijing’s overall work on identifying geological disaster hazards and managing risks during the flood season. The two sides held in-depth discussions on key issues including the technical architecture of the foundation model, core algorithms for AI-based disaster identification, and computing infrastructure and support services. They also reached consensus on areas for joint research and development in the next stage.
Officials from relevant departments of the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring, together with representatives from the Geological Disaster Department and Big Data Center of the Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering and the Beijing Institute of Geo-Hazard Prevention, also participated in the visit.
