Building Dreams for the Future: Graduates’ Design Exhibition of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture Opens at Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall

On August 22, 2024, the “2024 Graduates’ Design Exhibition – Inheritance, Renewal, Dynamic and Coexistence” of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) was inaugurated on the fourth floor of the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall. The opening ceremony was attended by Zheng Yu, Party Secretary of BUCEA, Chen Hongbing, Party Committee Member and Vice President, Wei Chuyuan, Party Committee Member and Minister of the Publicity Department, Zhang Jie, Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning and National Master of Engineering Survey and Design, Zhao Xing, Director of the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, as well as key representatives from BUCEA’s Publicity Department, Office of Party and Government Affairs, Academic Affairs Office, and Student Affairs Department. The event was hosted by Mu Jun, Executive Dean of the School of Architecture, and was attended by the school’s leadership, department heads, outstanding design instructors, graduates, current students, representatives of the 2024 undergraduate freshmen and their parents, along with media and other guests.


Vice President Chen Hongbing delivered the opening speech, highlighting BUCEA’s rich history as a century-old, high-level university deeply aligned with the times and the capital’s urban and rural development. The theme of this year’s graduate design exhibition, “Inheritance, Renewal, Dynamic and Coexistence,” reflects the contemporary pulse of urban and rural renewal and spatial revitalization. The exhibited works are not only a testament to the graduates’ intelligence and creativity but also a reflection of the university’s educational philosophy and achievements. Chen expressed hope that the graduates would remain committed to their mission, applying their knowledge and skills in their future careers to contribute to urban development and China’s modernization. He also encouraged the incoming freshmen to be inspired by these outstanding graduates, to chase their dreams, and to achieve success at BUCEA.


Zhao Xing, Director of the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, warmly welcomed all guests, faculty, and students. She emphasized that BUCEA, with its strong tradition of serving the capital’s planning and construction needs, has consistently been at the forefront of urban and rural development, producing numerous outstanding talents for the nation and the capital. Zhao expressed hope that this exhibition would foster a platform for exchange and collaboration, promote academic innovation in the field of urban and rural planning, and drive sustainable urban development. She also encouraged more young people to develop an interest in urban planning and architectural design, contributing to the future of planning and construction.


Zhang Jie, Distinguished Dean of the School of Architecture, provided an overview of the exhibition. He noted that 2024 has been a fruitful year for Beijing’s urban development and for BUCEA, with the successful inscription of the “Beijing Central Axis” as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the approval of doctoral programs in urban planning and landscape architecture at the School of Architecture. These achievements have provided an excellent platform for students to learn and grow. Zhang emphasized that the graduation design is a critical milestone in shaping students’ future academic and professional paths, showcasing diverse and innovative outcomes across disciplines. He expressed hope that the exhibition would be a resounding success and that the students would continue to make significant strides in their academic pursuits.


The exhibition features 12 outstanding graduation design projects from BUCEA’s School of Architecture, covering five disciplines: architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, historic building conservation engineering, and environmental design. The projects are rooted in Beijing and address current issues such as cultural heritage preservation and renewal, post-disaster reconstruction, linear cultural belt renewal, and the revitalization and reuse of industrial heritage. These works not only represent the graduates’ wisdom and talent but also encapsulate the university’s educational principles and outcomes.


The exhibition is open to the public from August 22 to October 7, with visiting hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, from Tuesday to Sunday. The exhibition is located on the fourth floor of the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, and visitors can make reservations through the WeChat account of “Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall”.
