Symposium on Resilient City Planning & Construction Held in Beijing

On the afternoon of April 11, a seminar on resilient city planning and post-disaster reconstruction was held at the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Design (the “Institute”), where Wang Kai, President of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD), Yang Xiaochun, Vice President of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Shenzhen University, and Xu Zhen, Vice President of the Research Institute of Urbanization and Urban Safety at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), along with approximately 20 others, attended. Zhang Xiaoxin, Deputy Party Secretary of the Institute, and He Qin, Vice President of the Institute, joined the discussion with relevant officials from departments of Master Planning, Urban Renewal Planning, Transportation Planning, and Ecological Planning.

Zhang Xiaoxin provided an overview of the Institute and outlined the progress of planning initiatives related to resilient city construction. He Qin then briefed the participants on the Institute’s active involvement in recovery and reconstruction efforts following the July-23 flood. Subsequently, the Department of General Planning and the Department of Urban Renewal presented reports and engaged in discussions regarding the “Special Planning of Beijing on Resilient City Spaces (2022-2035)” and the “Post-Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction Plan for Fangshan District (2023-2035)” respectively. Through the symposium, participants have explored the significant reference value of the Beijing Resilient City Planning. They highlighted its practicality during the recovery efforts after the July-23 flood, thus acknowledging the Institute’s commendable work in resilient city planning and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.

The discussions also covered regional governance, policy requirements, scientific and technological assistance, communication mechanisms, engineering standards, among others. Both parties emphasized the importance of enhancing future exchanges and discussions, aiming to collaboratively explore planning and governance strategies amidst the multifaceted challenges of urban safety.
