In order to implement the instructions of the municipal government, and considering that soundscape is a new concept lacking successful cases in China, the Commission has decided to integrate soundscape design into the implementation of the key projects based on theoretical and academic research carried out so far. The Zhangjiawan Design Town Square (located at the intersection of Zhangfeng Road and Guangyuan Road, covering an area of about 0.9 hectares, 122m long from east to west and 74m wide from north to south) is designated as a pilot project to highlight the environmental enhancement of soundscape design.

The Commission has evaluated the sound environment in the completed park based on the existing landscape design scheme, and optimized the design scheme according to the use function of the park, so as to improve the sound environment of the park through engineering measures and weaken the pollution of traffic noise. The goal is to create a relaxing, beautiful and immersive healthy soundscape environment, bring into play the restorative effect of soundscape on living environment, explore the cultural values of soundscape design and the comprehensive application of technological innovations in urban architecture and interdisciplinary research in soundscape design, improve the comprehensive quality of Beijing’s sound environment, and build a first-in-class harmonious and livable city. Inspired by the historical background of Tongniu (bronze ox), the latest acoustic technology and concepts are used to bring the soundscape art to the heart of the design to build a bridge between the landscape and the history, thus reflecting the combination of design art and acoustic science, creating a comfortable public space environment with demonstration effect.

At present, Zhangjiawan Design Town Square has already started the landscape construction, soundscape elements have been integrated into the landscape design scheme, and the intelligent soundscape support system has been pre-buried in the park, both sides of the road are elevated to form a terrain slope, masking the traffic noise, making the road a silent path, creating an auditory feeling that accompanies walking. The square will accommodate public activities, exhibition, leisure communication and cultural entertainment, which will help Zhangjiawan Design Town become the iconic design benchmark, providing a good demonstration effect to enhance the urban vitality of the area.
