Introduction to the Archives

Beijing Urban Construction Archives are specialised national archives. The department is responsible for collecting, sorting and preserving all archives and materials regarding urban planning, construction, and management. Since its official opening in 1990, the archives have gradually formed an archives collection system featuring a large number of files across 16 categories—urban survey, urban planning, urban construction management, municipal public facility projects completed, urban pipeline projects completed, transportation projects completed, industrial construction projects completed, civil construction projects completed, urban construction project design, civil air defence projects, water conservancy and disaster prevention projects completed, landscaping, historical sites, urban construction research, audio and video recordings, and physical objects.

Currently, the archives house about 1 million volumes of paper archives, as well as a large number of audio-visual files, microforms, base maps and models. The categories of planning and management include various approval and post-approval supervision files of Beijing’s planning and management departments regarding land and engineering planning (including construction, installation and municipal administration). The categories of projects completed after 1990 boast the largest number of archives, while the archives of the Baiwanzhuang Road Project completed in 1952 boast the earliest date in the categories of completed projects. Design related archives mainly come from the Beijing General Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, with the archives formed in 1950 as the earliest ones of its kind. The earliest photo archives are about the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway designed and constructed entirely by Chinese citizens. The archives are also home to the only 1949 Beijing City Model in Its Original State made in the early 1950s.
