The 2022 Beijing Vocational Skills Competition for Geological Surveyors has completed successful. Jointly hosted by Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources and Beijing Municipal Workers’ Union, and organized by the Beijing Geological and Mineral Survey Institute in association with the Beijing Staff Skills Association, the Competition was designed mainly for geo-disaster surveyors from the sector of geological exploration.

The competition was carried out as per the “Notice on the Second National Geological Surveyor Competition for the Geological Survey Industry” of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Committee of China Energy and Chemical Geological Union and the Geological Disaster Technical Guidance Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The competition followed strictly the Covid-19 rules in Beijing and was a great event implementing General Secretary Xi’s instruction on improving preparedness against natural disasters and enhancing skills training, and building a high-quality, professional team in Beijing against all types of geological disasters.

The competition took reference of the knowledge and skill requirements for geological surveyor (National Vocational Qualification Level 3) specified in the National Occupational Skill Standard (2019), and took into consideration the training of high-quality technical personnel and the requirements of related posts. New knowledge, technology and skills were added to the competition, which combined theoretical knowledge and practical operation but focused on the latter.

Launched at the end of July, the competition was participated by 476 technicians from 17 municipal and central-government-level geological survey units in Beijing, and 28 contestants made it to the final round after the preliminary and the re-testing selection. During the competition, leaders of the institute such as Li Wenzhong and Liu Liangang visited the site and offered their guidance.

The final round of the competition was held from August 29 to 30, centering on core cataloging and landslide disaster investigation (including field mapping survey and indoor comprehensive research and results compilation). Theoretical knowledge accounted for 30% of the final score, and skills operation accounted for 70%. Zhang Bin, deputy dean and professor of the School of Engineering of China University of Geosciences, and Sun Yi, a professor-level senior engineer of the former Beijing Municipal Institute of Comprehensive Construction Survey and Design, were invited to the competition as lead judges. Experts from the Beijing Municipal Workers’ Union, Beijing Staff Skills Association, the Commission’s Fengtai Bureau and Beijing Geological and Mineral Survey Institute have actively facilitated the organization of the competition following the principle of openness, fairness and transparency.

The competition advocated the spirit of model workers, the spirit of labor and the spirit of craftsmanship, and encouraged more professional and technical personnel to study new technologies, master new skills and strive for greater performance. The competition played a positive role in improving the overall qualification of geological surveyor and helped create a sound social environment for enhancing the skills of surveyors for natural resources and geological disasters.
