On November 4 and 5, the 2021 Summit Forum – “Geology Talk by Academicians” was held on Coordinated Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Geo-Ecological and Environmental Development. The forum was held virtually in Beijing and Mr. Liu Liangang, Vice President of Beijing Institute of Geological & Prospecting Engineering attended the forum.

The forum followed the Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and the concept of green and low-carbon sustainable development. Under the theme of “Green and Coordinated Development”, the forum was co-organized by the Geological Society of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province, with the aim of actively responding to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Coordinated Development Strategy, showcasing cutting-edge research results in the field of geology and ecology, and giving full play to the important role of geological work.

18 academicians and experts, including academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, geologist Li Tingdong and Liu Jiaqi, made presentations on the role of geological work in the coordinated development of the region, the characteristics of geological work in the new era, the energy picture in China and how geological work contributes to “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality”. Exchanges were held on new technologies and their application in geological surveys, ecological and environmental analysis as well as disaster prevention and relief. Participants to the forum also shared experiences in delivery of governmental and societal services. Through presentations and case studies, attendees delved into the supportive role of geological work in social and economic development, and shared their suggestions for the sustainable development of geological and ecological environment in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Zheng Guisen, deputy inspector and chief engineer of the former Municipal Geological Survey Bureau, made a presentation titled “Geological Research in the Perspective of Sustainable Urban Development”, which analyzed the demand for resources and environment in different stages of urban development from the perspectives of balancing population, socio-economy and environment, and proposed the direction, target and task of geological work in the four stages of urban development based on the effectiveness and problems identified in urban geological work.

Nan Yun, deputy director and chief engineer of the Beijing Institute of Geology, gave a presentation titled “Current Situation and Prevention and Control of Sudden Geological Disasters in Beijing”, which shared the overall picture of sudden geological disasters in Beijing and response measures taken. Nan’s presentation covered geological disaster investigation and evaluation, monitoring and early warning, comprehensive management, emergency disposal, scientific and technological support capacity enhancement, popularization of science and technology, and preparation of standards and norms. He also envisioned the prospect of sudden geological disaster prevention and control in the future.

Li Zhiping, a senior engineer of the Beijing Hydrological Team, and Zhang Xinwei, a senior engineer of Beijing Engineering Consulting Ltd., made presentations titled “Rising Groundwater Level and Its Impact on Underground Engineering in the Beijing Plain Area” and “Construction of Geological Safety Monitoring and Early Warning System and Its Application in the Transportation Network of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region”, which discussed pathways and means to promote the coordinated development of geological environment in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei from multiple angles and aspects, such as national strategy, geologists, cities, resources and environment, transportation, etc.

Yu Chunlin, Secretary General of the Beijing Geological Society, moderated the forum. In his concluding speech, he emphasized that geological work is a fundamental and ground-breaking for urban development, and its results play an indispensable role in supporting urban planning decisions and safe operation. The Geological Society of Beijing will grasp with frontier geological science and technology, focus on core technologies, build a high-level academic exchange platform, and contribute to the Coordinated Development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, and serve economic and social development and ecological civilization.

The forum takes an overall approach and is both pragmatic and research oriented, which provides an industrial platform for exchange and communication between different regions, and is of great significance to accelerating the Coordinated Development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region and to the high-quality development of geology.

A total of 10,000 people have watched the live-stream of the forum and its playback. In addition to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, industrial practitioners from Inner Mongolia, Henan, Liaoning, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Hunan, Ningxia, Chongqing and other regions also attended the forum.
